In The Hot Seat - Arjun Bhatia, An Inspiring Automotive Photographer From India | Interview

In our popular series "In The HotSeat", we bring you another inspiring interview with Mr. Arjun Bhatia who is a full-time automotive photographer. He already worked with some well-known brands like BMW and many more. Let's hear about him in his own words,

1)Tell us something about your education and profession?

- I’m a Business programming graduate and stepped into chartered accountancy way back in 2014, however, I had an intent from the start and was particularly inclined towards photography which made me drop my career in Chartered Accountancy and switch to professional photography. Thus, I learned professional photography and grabbed my diploma in advanced photography.

2)What are your key areas of photography lifestyle/travel/automotive/street?

-To be honest I’ve always been attracted to automobiles, however, I love wildlife photography and tabletop Photography as well. Though I’ve done several fashion shoots too I somehow couldn’t unleash my creativity with it.

And as a photographer, I click what pleases my eye, irrespective of the nature of the shoot.

3)How did you start with automotive photography? What's the story behind choosing this profession?

-Way back in 2015, one of my friends who runs a superbike club in Delhi took me to the track as I was working as their official photographer.

I couldn’t sleep for days as the pops and bangs kept on echoing inside my head, and watching bikers going nuts over 280-290 trying to knee drag at the turns gave me goosebumps. Since then, I’ve been visiting the track every weekend. And the purpose for choosing this profession? *Sheer Happiness *

4)Which camera you use for photography? What's the reason behind choosing that camera? Which app and software you use for editing?

-I use a Canon 7D with 70-200 f/2.8 IS3 at the track for the turns as it carries a tremendous fps and a Canon 5D Mk3 with a 24-105mm f/2.8 or 50mm f/1.8 for the panning shots.

I’m naive at post-processing as I believe in capturing the best possible while shooting. So I take my time in shooting rather than post-processing later, but if I ever play with contrast and sharpness then it’s through Lightroom CC.

5)How to approach brands for collaboration? How did you get your first brand collaboration?

-Well, I’d advise you to wait whilst you keep on showcasing your work. Let your pictures speak and grab that attention. Being very honest, I never contacted anyone for any collaboration ever, all I got was through Instagram and Facebook page back then.

6)Is it a right to drop out of college to make a career in automotive photography or any creative field?

-I would recommend to do it side by side, because I’m sure when you’d be applying for a company then they are going to ask for the educational qualifications, notwithstanding what the person possesses on the creative end. Photography doesn’t require too much time, so one can manage it along with his/her studies.

7)How to make a career in automotive photography? From where to start?

-To start in automotive photography, try clicking random cars first. I’ve seen people waiting to click Ferraris and Lamborghinis on their first day, it shouldn’t be about which car is it that you’re going to click, just manage the perspective and take care of the reflections.

8)Tell us something about your achievements?

-My achievements? I just had loads of work experience which includes shooting officially for Sikh Motorcycle Club, Northern Auto Sport Association, Group of Delhi Super bikers, DG Races, JK Tyre Motorsports, VW India, BMW India, Evo India, Airoh, Cannonball Club, and Buddh International Circuit, the list is pretty long :D

9)What tips or hacks do you like to share with budding photographers and readers of this post?

-Just keep on shooting with whatever you have, try shooting it on manual mode to polish your exposure metering skills and experiment with framing. If you have a smartphone then you can try applications like RAW+ that allow you to click pictures with manual settings for free, for the first 100 pictures though but it can be really helpful. Happy Clicking:)

I hope this interview with Arjun Bhatia may motivated you to make career in automotive photography field and I would also like to thank Arjun brother for contributing to the "In The HotSeat" series. Please share this post so that it will reach to those people who want to make career in creative fields.
