In The Hot Seat - Sukant Kadam, A Para-Badminton Player From India | Interview

In this post, I will share the interview of Sukant Kadam, a professional para-badminton player, who has also represented India at the international level. This interview is a part of our most inspiring series called "In The HotSeat". Without wasting any more time, let's start the interview.

1) Tell us something about your education and profession.

-I came to Pune for my study at Government College of Engineering and Research, Avasari Khurd for mechanical engineering, and I passed out in 2015 with first class. Later, I joined Nikhil Kanetkar Badminton Academy and was trained under Nikhil Kanetkar and Mayank Gole since July 2015. Now I am training in a national training camp under Gaurav Khanna (badminton), the head coach of the Indian Para-badminton team.

During my first year of mechanical engineering in January 2011 in Government College Of Engineering And Research, Avasari Khurd, I got rejected from the class team because of my slow movement. After a year of practice and hard work, I got a chance to play on my college team. In 2012, Para Athlete Girisha Nagarajegowda won the silver medal in the high jump (F42) 2012 Summer Paralympics. In that way, I got to know about Paralympic sports and Para-badminton. I made my debut at the England Para-Badminton International in 2014.

2) When did you start playing badminton?

-I started playing badminton in 2011, while I was studying in an engineering college.

3) What is the reason behind you pursuing badminton as a full-time career?

-My reason behind pursuing badminton as a full-time career is that I am passionate about sports. Since my childhood, I had been following many star athletes.

4) Which badminton racket are you using currently?

-I am using the badminton rackets from Windstrome 75.

5) What challenges did you face at the beginning of your sports career? How did you overcome those challenges?

-I had suffered from an injury, which affected me along with my family, and due to that my family used to keep me away from sports.

To overcome these challenges, I tried to stay connected to sports in various ways.

6) Tell us something about your greatest achievements.

-I won the bronze medal in MD SL3-SL4 at the Para-Badminton Asian Championships – 2016. I also won the bronze medal at the Asian Para Games – 2018. In 2019, I won the gold medal at the IWAS World Games – 2019 and the bronze medal at the BWF Para-Badminton World Championships – 2019.

7) How do you keep yourself motivated?

-For motivation, I keep thinking about positive things only and stay away from the negative ones. While exercising, I read motivational quotes, which inspires us to do our best in our career or daily exercises.

8) If someone is interested in sports but his/her parents are not supporting him/her to make a career in such a field, so what is message would you like to give those parents?

-I would tell the parents that if their kids are interested in sports, they should be given a chance to pursue it because there is no fixed system for defining one's career. Whenever you get the opportunities, or whenever you are passionate about your dreams, you should follow them. If a child has an interest in sports, he would dream of being a sportsman. So, he should follow his dreams. His parents should give him a chance to try it.

I hope this interview with Sukant Kadam has inspired you to build a career in sports. I would also like to thanks Sukant Sir for his contribution to the "In The HotSeat" series. If you like this series, then please share this post with your friends & family.
